sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve is one of the bariatric surgery procedures. The sleeve is a digestive surgery performed under general anesthesia and consists of reducing the size of the stomach in order to lose weight quickly or lose belly. A smaller stomach fills up faster, creating a feeling of satiety without eating in excess. sleeve surgery is often an option for people who are not eligible to safely have other obesity surgeries.

indications for a Sleeve gastrectomy

Gastric sleeve  is a gastric operation to  weight loss which consists in removing about 2/3 of the stomach essentially the part that includes the cells secreting ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates appetite. The stomach is thus reduced to a vertical tube where food quickly passes to the intestine. Although the sleeve decreases appetite, the digestion of food is not disturbed for all that.  Sleeve gastrectomy is intended for people who suffer from morbid obesity and whose BMI (Body Mass Index) is equal to or greater than 35. The BMI is calculated by dividing the weight by the squared height.

What are the features of effective intervention ?

The advantage of the gastric sleeve  is that there is no foreign body as is the case for the gastric band. Weight loss with a sleeve gastrectomy is deeper and more durable compared to the gastric banding technique. The failure rate is very low. With the sleeve technique, there is no need for a dietary supplement. There is no vitamin loss compared to gastric bypass
The main advantage of a sleeve over other stomach operations for weight loss or weight loss is that patients can eat a wider variety of foods.

Result of a  sleeve gastrectomy

In a person with a BMI equal to 40 Kg/m2 and of medium height (1.70 m), it is possible to predict a loss of 45 to 65% of excess weight which corresponds to a weight loss of about 25 to 35 Kg after 6 months. On average, patients who undergo gastric sleeve surgery in Tunisia lose more than half of their excess weight. The results of this type of operation are highlighted by a clear improvement in the level of patient weight as well as a remedy for health problems related to obesity, the decrease in feelings of depression is also one of the greatest advantages of this bariatric operation.
A sleeve operation involves the permanent removal of the lateral 2/3 of the stomach with a stapling device. This reduces the size of the stomach from the size of a football to the size of the banana. Another way to explain the procedure is that it essentially leaves a narrow stomach tube instead of a stomach bag. The holding capacity of the stomach is reduced from about 1.5 liters of food and liquid to about 200 ml. Due to this much smaller stomach, patients feel full after eating much less food than usual. Patients also feel less hungry between meals.
